Aid for Devastated Barbuda school
On 8th May a visit was arranged by the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission to Barbuda with the purpose of presenting a number of necessary items to help the Sir McChesney George Secondary School in Barbuda. As we are all aware, the island was devastated by Hurricane Irma last September. Recovery efforts are on-going and a number of Barbudans are returning home and facing a daunting task of re-settlement given that many properties are roofless and many others completely devastated.
Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, the Antigua and Barbuda High Commissioner in London reached out for support and Nonsuch Bay Resort, along with home owners and visitors decided that it was time to help with the re-construction efforts.
The Chairman of Nonsuch Bay Development company, David Smith, visited the island along with Dawn and Andrew Thomas, executive members of the Antigua and Barbuda National Association (London). What they discovered was tragic, but heartwarming as there was still much devastation evident, but a strong will to re-build lives and properties was apparent.
The types of items donated by Nonsuch Bay Resort included printers, computers, central supplies and air conditioning units. The visitors were quite overwhelmed by the gratitude of the staff and students who were sure the items would make life better in what can be extremely hot and challenging conditions.
The school is a highly impressive organisation led by John Mussington and a team of highly motivated teaching staff, with many practical, leading edge activities, particularly around the biology department where a mini farm, fish plant and a fast track vegetable growing facility is in operation. The school combines academic achievement with a real practical aspect to ensure in future the island becomes as self sufficient in food as possible.
The school re-opened in January and there are now 150 students ranging in age from 5 to 14 years.
